406. ORLOV NYC EVENT CANCELED

Camrade Orlov has now posted a mea culpa for his recent numerical blunder.

(BTW, my recent expose DMITRY ORLOV CONCEDES HE'S AN IDIOT is now on the front page of Google for "Dmitry Orlov". As usual, Peak Oil Debunked powers through the seas of doomer bullshit, straight to the top of the charts.)

Reading the comments to that article, I was amused to see that Dmitry had a presentation (tickets: $20-30) scheduled in NYC for July 11, 2009, but it was cancelled due to poor ticket sales. Apparently only 18 people in the entire NY metropolitan area (population 8.3 million +) expressed any interest. LOL

For reference, here's the comments:

"I just found out that the event in NY is cancelled. A couple of days ago I called Local Energy Solutions to find out why my check was not cashed, and I've got a reply that the event might be postponed or cancelled because there was not enough response."

"Wow. Only 18 people bought tickets for the talk? I was expecting "sold out" and hundreds of people bustling in an auditorium, not "cancelled"."

"Can't believe the NY event is off !"

Clearly the event was nuked due to pathetic turn out. True blue americans can smell a rat a mile away.

Just out of interest where does it say it is cancelled??
On the brown paper tickets (link you supplied) it says the event has sold out.

This is nonsense - the event is going ahead! Wishful thinking from a nonsense blog

Maybe we should rename them Pavlovians. He rings a bell and they all start salivating. LOL!!!

You're slipping JD. Your recent posts are more petty and mean-spirited than before. Orlov did not conceded he was an idiot, nor did he issue a "mea culpa." He did correct the errors in his math for you "arithmeticians," and as he said, that correction did not change the thrust of what he said. Of course you must understand that. It must be tough to have painted yourself into a corner from which you cannot escape.

JD,

You're missing the point. The event is still going on. In the hearts of the true believers.

HDT,

It's funny that it's mean-spirited to you to call out the blustery extremists, but not mean-spirited for these people to essentially announce the deaths of millions or even billions.

Heh Dumbass, peak oil is ABOUT ARITHMETIC.

If supply - demand > 0 then peak oil is irrelevant since there will be no huge price shocks tanking the economy.

So arithmetic is not only relevant, it's CENTRAL.

Jeez.

On the collapse meme:
Many of the collapseniks say that the electric grid will go down after a putative peak because there will be not enough diesel or gasoline to run the maintenance vehicles.

Sorry to disillusion you guys, but the first EV maintenance truck specifically designed to maintain the electric grid has been bought by a utility. Seems the lights will be staying on.

"The Smith Newton is the world’s largest battery-electric-powered truck. Equipped with a 120 kW induction motor and a Li-ion battery pack, it has a top speed of up to 50 mph, a range in excess of 100 miles and a payload of up to 16,280 lbs. The Altec component, an AT37-G aerial boom, is a telescopic articulating device used for electric utility line maintenance and installation. The aerial has a maximum height of 37.8 feet and reach of 28.3 feet.

SEV US is initially focusing its production on battery-electric-powered vehicles for depot-based predictable-route delivery and service fleets."

Maybe you should have included the other bit of his post:

"To a skeptic, I once proclaimed "we are spewing 22 billion tons of carbon into the air annually." They responded, "Actually, it's 27 billion tons." Some people just miss the point."

Something to think about...

HDT,

Who exactly is slipping? Matthew Simmons who broadcasted $10 gas back in 2005, claimed we were heading a gas crunch by 2005, claimed oil prices were only going to climb last year and "we didn't have any evidences of a glut," or OPEC now having no spare capacity? Mr. “Klusterfuck” Kunstler who predicted a liquiditation of everything under the American sun by Memorial Day? The Oil Drum which claimed shale gas would prove futile - right when we were pumping the stuff out of their rears!

It doesn't matter whether Orlov posted he was an idiot on his blog or not: he was caught in a moronic numerical flub a sixth-grader could see through, and 'fessed up to it. The fact he earned the hearts of 18 zealous sheep proves he's washed up.

We have an oil and gas glut, battery technology breakthroughs up the yin-yang, oil demand sinking to the bottom - the debunkers are not the ones slipping.

Apologies to the 18 people who bought tickets; they will be refunded.
I'll recycle the questions people have raised into blog posts instead.

From Orlov's website. LOL. This is just fucking pathetic.

BTW JD, the population of metro NYC is more like north of 20 million, not just 9 million.

Probably just a difference of the actual city population versus the population of the metropolitan area.

Seems this trader only got caught as he tried to run the fiddle during a period of low trading volume. It certainly lends credence to some US lawmakers worried about what goes on on the ICE futures exchanges. I suspect this to be the thin end of the wedge.

Ari, hypothetically (that means you can't say "but I don't") if you genuinely believed that the current modus operandi of civilization would result in the deaths of millions, even billions - would it be more mean spirited NOT to announce it than to announce it?

It is possible that the collapse/preppers are simply not in NYC metro market because they voted with their feet long ago to be in small towns, villages, and farms.

If you've looked around NYC lately you'll see a lot of closed retail and restaurants, in many ways it is not as an exciting place as it was 2+ years ago. With that background and increasing economic hardtimes for many people (I had 4 people living with me from my church up until a week ago, now only one), going into NYC for a presentation, dinner, etc is a little outside of the budget.

Orlov needs to do something that Ford did in yesteryear when it introduced the 64+1/2 mustang, go to every hamlet and talk. There it might be standing room only in the Granges, and VFW's, and KnightsOfColumbus's of the world.

So all PO folks are 5th graders. JD has atleast 7th grade math based on these statements.

I am the reverse doomer. But, let's get back to facts and not let the PO retards run the show. IEA. We need another 3 Saudis to make up the diffence. Well there are prolly 6 or 7 Saudis right where the Saudi reside. Stupid, layman CPA talking here, that is amazed by "GAIL THE ACTUARY". If there on the average, 1/3 oil recovery without EOR. With 1trillion recovered, means there is 6 trillion to be known. CO2 EOR could potentially bring the US to 250B with in place 1T with not even touching Bakken or the oil shales.

NASA has gotten involved with Algal. Best solution I have seen.

Doomers. If you can't Hacket, get your Jacket.

Yes, I'm sure blue collar workers, veterans and NFL fans will be thrilled to hear a Russian brag about the superiority of the USSR and call Americans swine.

Marty,

Any way you look at it, NYC is still a great place to be compared to the rough 70s and 80s. No more mugger money, far fewer dangerous neighborhoods, and even if some retail has been decimated, I'd say that most New Yorkers are up for toughing it out a few years.

New York has been through much worse, and it'll get through this no sweat.

Anon, HDT or whoever you are,

In he past four years, we've seen EV batteries that are fast-charging, and another one that lasts 180,000 miles; we've gone from a "natural gas crisis" to having more nat. gas than we know what to do with; we've witnessed Brazil make fabulous discoveries, the Gulf of Mexico step up, learn of fabulous untapped potential in E. Siberia; we've seen only the prelude of solar - that is, it's getting cheaper and will only do so more; and you peaktards, while you we're grasping at Mr. "King of Peak" Simmons's word of $300+ oil, we were giving the heads up about demand destruction, a concept that's leaped from your imaginations until recently.

'Bout Algae - lol! Four years ago, you we're lamenting about having no "Plan B" on natural gas, the fact N America would have to tap the Arctic or offshore, and you we're pissing your pants about Russia hitting declines. The fabulous Oil Drum dismissed shale gas extraction last year - right while the stuff was bursting out of our rears!!

The peak crowd had no imagination with shale gas extraction, and they have no imagination (or understanding of technology) anywhere else. Run to the omnipotent Drum, little feebly, for your daily dosing of Kool-Aid.

Orlov strikes me as a bitter man with very little to say other than "America Sucks". It makes me wonder why he's still here??

At any rate, thanks for this blog. I've been reading Next Big Future and a variety of other blogs and publications. The future looks bright, indeed. So many renewables and new possibilities.

I'm sure at least one of those possibilities will lead to another boom and eventual bust (like so many things before). But, I'm not particularly afraid of some kind of oil-crisis-apocalypse.

I'm just not that religious.

I'm really interested in the bioengineering of diatoms as a renewable source...among other things.

Kudos for calling Mr. Orlov on the bullshit.

You know, I think you should get together with Penn & Teller to create an episode of Bullshit devoted to Peakniks. Maybe contact the Skeptic, too, or the James Randi Educational Foundation.

Just a thought :)
